Champagne and special events go hand-in-hand, and what event is more special than a wedding? Take the following points into consideration to determine how many bottles of champagne to buy for your wedding reception.
Number of Guests
A typical 750 ml bottle of champagne fills three to four glasses. For small glasses, four servings per bottle is a safe estimate. For larger glasses, estimate three servings per bottle. So, if you expect 75 guests and plan to serve each guest one glass of champagne, plan to purchase 19 to 25 bottles.
Not Everyone Will Drink
Keep in mind those guests who are under the legal drinking age or who simply don't drink alcohol. That will affect the number of bottles you buy. This can be difficult to assess if you're planning a large wedding and don't know everyone's preference. A solution is to ask guests to include information about children or alcohol preferences when they R.S.V.P.
Time of Wedding
If your wedding reception is in the morning, chances are that guests will drink less alcohol than at dinner and evening wedding receptions.
When it doubt, always over-estimate the amount of champagne you need. It's better to have bottles left over than it is to run out. Ask your vendor about the return policy for unopened bottles of champagne. You can also keep the leftover bottles for yourself or give them as gifts.
Champagne is often reserved for toasts. To reduce the number of bottles you need to buy, plan a minimal number of formal toasts. Consider shortening the length of the wedding reception, or having the champagne available for only a limited amount of time. Note that many people merely sip the champagne because it is in front of them or because they are being served. Avoid wasting champagne by handing out filled glasses to everyone; instead, let your guests pour their desired amount. Another option is to offer both sparkling water and champagne so that guests can choose.
