What Is an ASP Baton?

Not only are ASP batons made to serve and protect law enforcement personnel, but they are also offered to protect you. According the Tactical Batons website, the ASP baton has been tested and proven to be "virtually indestructible." It is easy to carry (can be attached to a belt or belt loop or carried in a purse) and readily available to use. Along with maze and types of pepper spray, the ASP baton is considered to be one of the finest impact weapons available.

  1. Basics

    • The ASP baton is an instrument or weapon that you can use for self-defense. Normally police officers will carry these as their "clubs" for slugging criminals, but they are also available to the general public for purchase. You must be at least 18 years of age to buy one.

    Identification

    • When expanded, ASP batons can be as short as 16 inches and as long as 31 inches. They are normally around 7 inches long when they are not expanded. All batons are black when closed and have lighter colors when expanded. The sections of the baton can reflect light but are not shiny. They basically look like a 2 1/2-foot-long black club.

    Types

    • The main types of ASP batons are the Airweight, Black Chrome, Chrome, Electroless and Gold. According to ASP-net.com in the Tactical Batons article, the Airweight baton provides a 45 percent weight reduction from standard batons. This baton is light and convenient for carrying. The Black Chrome offers the most durable and corrosion-resistant black finish available, while the Chrome has a high-luster finish for increased visibility in low-light areas. The Electroless has a high-quality corrosion-resistant finish and is well-suited to humid environments, and the Gold baton is mainly used for presentations or given away as an award or gift. It has a jewelry-quality 18K gold finish.

    Considerations

    • If you are going to purchase an ASP baton for your own self-defense, it is recommended by officials that you refer to your local laws concerning the legality of private ownership of this weapon. Manufacturers of ASP batons will not deliver the product to states, cities or countries that restrict baton ownership.

    Warning

    • The ASP baton is a hazardous weapon that can result in serious injury or even death if not handled properly or is left in a child's care. Use precaution with the instrument at all times, and keep it in the closed position when it is not being used to prevent any issues or accidents from taking place.
