A locksmith installs, maintains, fixes and opens locks. They cut keys and change lock combinations and can also work in an advisory capacity with regards to security measures for residential, commercial and industrial properties.
A locksmith creates, installs, adjusts and services mechanical and electronic locks systems both using hand tools and special equipment. He can disassemble locks and open locked doors using a lock pick. Additionally, he can change the combination of locks by inserting new tumblers into them. A locksmith cuts keys for clients using a key cutting machine and maintains confidential client records, including duplicate keys and security codes.
In addition to independent locksmith shops, locksmiths may find employment working on staff at hotels, casinos, schools, hospitals, government facilities, and residential and commercial property management firms.
The successful candidate must possess strong basic math skills, including the ability to calculate using ratios, fractions and percentages. They must also possess the ability to understand complex manuals. Additionally, strong communication skills are important, as a locksmith is sometimes required to provide customers with multipart oral instructions.
Employers typically require successful candidates to possess a high-school diploma or equivalent and have participated in an approved locksmith apprenticeship. They must also pass a criminal background screening and provide evidence of insurability.
According to Salary.com, the average locksmith working in the United States earns an annual base salary of $42,245.
