Facts
-
K9 Advantix is a topical medication for animals that is used to treat and prevent common parasites in dogs. K9 Advantix is manufactured by Bayer in the United States of America. According to Drs Foster and Smith, K9 Advantix works by attacking the nervous system of a parasite when it comes in contact with the chemicals and causes paralysis and death. Generally, K9 Advantix is safe to use on dogs and puppies that are over the age of seven weeks old.
Types
-
K9 Advantix is used to prevent and treat an infestation of fleas, ticks (including deer ticks, American dog ticks, Brown dog ticks and Lone Star ticks) and mosquitoes. The prevention of ticks is especially important for dogs because ticks can carry Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and ehrlichiosis. Further, fleas often affect not only the host animal, but the homes and people with whom they come in contact. Flea eradication from clothing, bedding and carpets can be particularly difficult to combat, and it is best to prevent an infestation before it begins.

Effectiveness
-
K9 Advantix is a proven effective treatment for fleas, ticks, and mosquitoes provided that it is applied properly and on schedule. While K9 Advantix is water resistant, it can wash out of a dog's coat if a dog is engaged in repeated bathing or swimming and may be applied more frequently. Further, according to Drs Foster and Smith, "K9 Advantix kills 98 to 100 percent of existing fleas on dogs within 12 hours. Reinfesting fleas are killed within 2 hours with protection against further flea infestation lasting at least four weeks."
Application
-
K9 Advantix is applied topically. For dogs 20 lbs. or less, the treatment should be applied between a dog's shoulder blades. For larger dogs, above 21 lbs., K9 Advantix should be applied in three to four spots down the back of the dog. Pet owners should spread the dog's hair and apply the medication directly onto the dog's skin. There is no need to rub in the medication as the dog will distribute it through its own movement. The packet of medication that you should purchase for your dog varies on the dog's size. Be sure to thoroughly wash your hands after application.
Warning
-
It is important to remember that K9 Advantix is a medication and as such it needs to be treated as a potentially dangerous substance that should be kept out of the reach children. K9 Advantix can be harmful to human eyes and stain clothing. Further, it should only be used on dogs that are over seven-weeks old. If a pet has special health considerations or is pregnant or nursing, a veterinarian should be consulted prior to application. K9 Advantix should not be used on cats because they will ingest too much of the product during grooming. After the first application of K9 Advantix, be sure look out for unusual pet behavior. If your pet does fall ill, contact a veterinarian immediately.
