Volkswagen offered its Jetta sedan with a TDI 1.9L Turbo Diesel option during the vehicle's fifth generation in the 2000s. This engine helped provide a high fuel-efficiency model to compete against hybrid models from Toyota and Honda.
Engine
The Jetta 1.9 L TDI Turbo derives its power from a 1.9-liter, in-line four-cylinder motor running on diesel fuel. This eight-valve SOHC motor has a 3.13-inch bore, 3.76-inch stroke and a compression ratio of 18.5 to 1. Output is rated at 100 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 177 pound-feet of torque at 1,800 rpm.

The Jetta sits on a 101.5-inch wheelbase with a length of 179.3 inches, width of 70.1 inches and height of 57.4 inches. The weight of the turbo-diesel variant is 3,241 lb. when equipped with the six-speed automatic gearbox, while the five-speed manual model weighs 3,197 lb.
Fuel Economy
This model's diesel engine yields 35 mpg in city driving and 42 mpg on the highway when outfitted with a six-speed automatic gearbox, while the five-speed manual is rated at 36 mpg city and 41 mpg highway.
