The Blue Elephant Cooking School, located in Bangkok, Thailand, provides daily courses for those looking to try their hand at Thai cuisine. It is not an extensive or grueling course for those looking to step into the culinary world, but more for visitors and tourists. There are multiple cooking schools throughout the city of Bangkok, but the Blue Elephant Cooking School is one of the few that teaches Royal Thai cuisine.

    Location

  1. The Blue Elephant Cooking School is centrally located in Bangkok. It is across the street from the Surasak Sky Train system. The local address is 233 South Sathorn Rd, Kwaeng Yannawa, Khet Sathorn, Bangkok 10120, Thailand.
If taking a taxi or tuk-tuk to the location, tell the driver 233 South Sathorn Rd. This is a major street and he will most likely know where it is located.
  2. Price

  3. Class prices vary at the Blue Elephant Cooking School. For those looking for a single class, the cost is 2,800 baht per class (as of July 2009, $1 was equal to around 35 baht). Two classes is 5,000 baht, 7,500 for three, 10,000 for five, 12,000 for six and 14,000 for seven classes.
In addition you could take private classes. The cost is 5,000 baht for a private class of four menus, 10,000 for 8 menus, 6,000 for a vegetarian class, and 68,000 for a 5-day professional class taught by a professional chef.
  4. Class Times

  5. There are two different classes throughout the day. The first begins at 8:45 a.m. and lasts until 1:00 p.m. (or 13:00, because Thailand generally uses the 24-hour clock). The other class begins at 1:15 p.m. (13:15) and ends at 4:30 p.m. (16:30).
  6. Class Schedule

  7. The schedules vary slightly from the morning class to the afternoon class.

In the morning students will depart on the sky train toward the morning market. Here the instructor will walk students through how to purchase the right fruits, vegetables and spices for the dish they will create later in the day. Upon arriving back, the instructor will prepare the dish the students will later learn how to make. They will also receive a booklet with the recipe for the dish. Once the demonstration has completed, it will now be time for the students to try their hands at it. Of course the instructor will help with any questions. And then finally, upon completing the meal, the students will be able to eat their creations.

The afternoon class, for the most part, is the same as the first, except they do not go to the market to pick out the ingredients. For this reason, it is highly recommended to attend the morning class.
  8. Reservations

  9. The Blue Elephant Cooking School does take reservations, and if you want a guaranteed spot it is a good idea to make one. The Blue Elephant Cooking School reservation request form link can be found in the "Resources" section.
  10. What You Will Learn

  11. There is a wide range of dishes you can learn, depending on how many classes you take through the Blue Elephant Cooking School. You will learn a complete menu, from starter through to dessert.
For starters you will learn how to create a spring roll, which is the vegetarian version of an egg roll.
The soup you will learn is Chiang Mai soup, which is a clear vegetable soup. When cooking with poultry you will learn how to prepare Laab Kai, which is a minced chicken dish, flavored with lemongrass, lime leaves and fish sauce. Another dish you may learn is Massaman Kae, which is a lamb curry. It is slightly spicy and also contains nuts. As for dessert, you may expect to cook the Coconut Flan, which is a kind of caramelized custard pie.
