Correct Way to Post No Trespassing Signs

Strangers using your property for a walking path or hunters on your land can pose problems for you or your family. If there are children present, you may be concerned for their safety. Posting no trespassing signs around the edges of your property is one option--but there is a correct way to post no trespassing signs. They must be placed all around your land so that they can be seen by everyone. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Clear Signs

    • A simple "No Trespassing" or "Keep Out" sign is best. You can also get Farm Bureau-issued "No Trespassing" signs for rural areas. Do not use signs that have a funny phrasing. This can lead the invader into thinking that you aren't serious in your request. Never use vulgar of profane signs that may offend a neighbor.

    Perimeter

    • Make sure you know your property's boundaries. Find out where the outermost limits are before posting any signs. Your neighbors may have given certain people permission to be on their land. Do not post any signs on their property. If you are using a tree or fence post to place a sign, make sure it is within your boundaries.

    Posting Signs

    • If your yard is small, a few signs should be sufficient. If you are trying to secure acres of land, you will need many more signs and they will need to be spaced 20 to 30 feet apart. This depends on the number of trees and visibility. Place them four to six feet from the ground to ensure visibility.

    Hunting Signs

    • Depending on the state you live in, there are different laws in place regarding hunting and trespassing. In most states you can use purple tape to mark trees surrounding your property line to keep hunters out. Tie the tape around the trees around six feet up from the ground and space them so that they can be seen through the trees. This is the same as posting no trespassing signs, but it is specifically aimed at people who are hunting.

    Up keep

    • You will have to check all your signs at least three times a year. Make sure that no tree limbs have grown in and blocked any of the signs. Because of extreme hot and cold weather, the written message on the sign may become faded. Replace any signs that are damaged or hard to read and keep the tree limbs trimmed so that the signs can always be seen.
