Rubies have long been valued as beautiful and rare gemstones. The color of rubies ranges all along the spectrum of red from a light pink to dark purple. Rubies larger than 3 karats, however, rarely occur in nature. Cousin to the sapphire, rubies have a slightly different chemical makeup than other sapphires, which gives them their red coloring.

Rubies are red gemstones formed from corundum, which is made up of aluminum, iron, and small bits of chromium and titanium. Rubies are also extremely hard, in second place behind diamonds as the hardest gemstone that occurs in nature.

Even artificial rubies, which are formed in a laboratory, are often in demand due to the association of the stone with wealth.

The use of rubies is likely the reason that lasers are associated with the color red in popular media and fiction.

Though not as popular a use in the modern era, rubies were at one time accepted almost as freely as currency. This was especially true in Asia, where the ruby was a mark of status and nobility. Scabbards, saddles, armor, and other symbols of rank in India, China, and other countries in Asia are often found to bear rubies for decoration, and early records show that rubies were brought along the Silk Road from the East to the West for use in trade.
