DISH TV Information

As one of the major players in the satellite television industry, Dish TV or the Dish Network has emerged in many countries, providing consumers access to hundreds of TV channels around the globe, without limiting them to programmed channels provided by local cable companies.

  1. Materials

    • In order to use Dish TV or Dish Network, a small satellite dish has to be installed on your property or your roof with an open line of sight. The satellite dish is generally provided by the company. Consumers can buy additional receivers to view channels in separate rooms of their house. Receivers can be assembled by a professional or by following instructional videos yourself.

    How it Works

    • Before appearing as an image on your television screen, satellite signals that contain high-quality digital data first go through a compression. This is a process which removes unnecessary or repetitive information. Dish Network uses MPEG-4 compression, which can encode greater bandwidth for high-quality streaming.

    Top Satellite TV Providers

    • There are two major satellite TV providers: DirecTV and Dish TV or Dish Network. Both providers are similar except for the number of subscribers they have and a few special features.

    Advantages

    • Dish Network or Dish TV offers hundreds more channels than cable. With cable, subscribers have to pay an additional fee to view premium channels, such as HBO or Showtime. Dish Network subscribers automatically have access to these channels, with no additional fees included.

    Disadvantages

    • One downside to Dish Network or Dish TV is that subscribers cannot access local channels without obtaining an Advanced Television Systems Committee tuner. There is also the problem that the TV signal sometimes fails in thunderstorms, high winds or heavy snowstorms.
