Brief History

Sieur de la Vérendrye founded Portage La Prairie in 1738. Originally built as a base for exploring the nearby prairies, it eventually turned into a permanent settlement and became the first of its kind in western Canada. Today, Portage La Prairie is Manitoba's premier city and tourist attraction.

Complete with a functioning blacksmith shop, historic trading posts, schoolhouses and many restored homes, Fort La Reine and Pioneer Village depict life in the 1800s. The fort itself was built in 1738 and has remained a powerful reminder of North America's colonial history. Portage La Prairie is also the world's strawberry capital. Tourists may pick their own strawberries at U-Pick and Saskatoon Farm; each is located about 15 minutes outside the city. Picking strawberries is one of the region's favorite activities. Canada has a rich Native American heritage. Dakota Tipi and the Long Plain First Nation reservations are right outside the city of Portage La Prairie. Touring these important Native American settlements gives a one-of-a-kind look of the native people of Canada and their history.
