AARP Medicare Insurance Information

The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) promotes several insurance programs, through national providers, designed for seniors who are eligible for Medicare (age 65 or over). Sometimes the coverage can augment Medicare coverage. In most cases, seniors must be a member of AARP to take advantage of these programs.

  1. Medicare Advantage

    • The plans, offered by SecureHorizons, fall under the umbrella of AARP's Medicare Complete offerings. They can provide all of the coverage that Medicare provides, only with lower co-payments and coverage of some services not covered by Medicare. Some plans include prescription drug coverage. There are no limitations on pre-existing conditions, nor is a physical exam required. Coverage differs from state to state. Other requirements include eligibility for Medicare Plan A and payment of Medicare Plan B premiums.

    Medicare Supplement Insurance

    • This plan helps seniors on Medicare cover some expenses not paid for by that program, limiting out-of-pocket expenses. The supplemental insurance, provided by United HealthCare, does not put restrictions on which doctors patients can see, turns around nearly 95 percent of claims in 10 days or less and offers several plans, which are different in each state. This insurance can help with preventive care, in-home recovery and nursing facility co-insurance, which aren't always paid by Medicare.

    Medicare RX

    • This prescription drug plan by United HealthCare provides predictable copays, eliminates some deductibles and provides name-brand and generic prescription drugs to those on Medicare. It also offers savings on mail-order pharmacy orders. Medicare Part D is designed for seniors that need prescription drugs. AARP claims the plan has saved consumers $15 billion in prescription drug costs. Non-members are also eligible.

    Medical Supplies

    • AARP offers Medical Supply Services through Prescription Solutions for those suffering from diabetes or respiratory problems. This service is designed for Medicare Part B recipients. In many cases, the service can provide supplies with no out-of-pocket cost and free home delivery.

    Other Discounts

    • AARP offers other discount programs to seniors through its website. They include discounts on vision programs, fitness programs, dental insurance and long-term care. Non-members are also eligible for these products and services.
