GPS Systems for Dogs

If you're concerned about losing your dog when he wanders away to chase a squirrel, or want to keep track of your dog during outdoor activities, GPS dog tracking devices can give you a sense of security. GPS tracking devices for dogs help you locate your dog when it is lost or otherwise separated from you, and provide a high-tech way to keep tabs on your dog at all times.

  1. Function

    • Global Positioning System, or GPS, devices can be mounted on a dog collar or harness to help you locate the dog at any time, anywhere. GPS receivers are able to receive signals from satellites in orbit that can triangulate your dog's position. Some GPS dog products also include online mapping, e-mail or text message notification, and maps.

    Types

    • Some of the major manufacturers of GPS dog tracking devices are Garmin, Spotlight, Zoombak and PetSafe. Each manufacturer offers slightly different options on their products. Garmin, a major manufacturer of GPS and mapping devices, provides a dog-tracking collar that comes with a handheld device that can display color maps from memory cards inserted into the device. Spotlight includes a light that will illuminate when you are close to the lost dog.

    Significance

    • GPS dog tracking devices are useful for dog owners who may have difficulty containing an escape-prone dog or who allow their dogs to roam on large pieces of property. Additionally, these devices are helpful to those who hunt with dogs and want to find them easily in woods or rugged terrain. A GPS dog collar is an easy way to locate your dog quickly.

    Considerations

    • Your budget and needs will determine which GPS dog tracking device you choose. Some devices are too large for small dogs, 20 pounds or less. Also, some of the GPS devices require a monthly service fee, which may be $10 or more per month. You will also need to replace or recharge the device's batteries frequently to make sure the system is still working. Think about whether your dog is likely to get the device wet or otherwise damage it, and find a product that is as tough as your dog's behavior and activities demand.

    Misconceptions

    • A GPS dog tracking device is not a foolproof way of keeping track of your dog. The best way to keep your dog safe is to provide a securely fenced yard that your dog can't leave without your help and permission. You also should remember that a device attached to a collar can easily be lost if your dog manages to catch the collar on a fence or tree. Use a GPS tracking device in addition to other safety measures, like microchipping.
