What Is the Meaning of Insubordinate?

Whenever insubordination is taking place, it means some type of issue regarding compliance exists. If an employee is insubordinate, an employer will have specific remedies in place to address and correct the behavior. An employee who is not respecting authority is in a state of insubordination. This type of behavior can spread to other areas of the company and affect other employees if nothing is done about it. Other employees may decide to act in the same manner if they think there is no penalty or consequences.

  1. Challenge Authority

    • An employee is insubordinate if he disobeys authority, including the rules and regulations of the organization. If an employee refuses to obey a direct order that is related to his job duties, then he is being insubordinate. For instance, if an employee is told to take or receive incoming customer service calls and he refuses, this is considered insubordination.

    Evaluation

    • If insubordination occurs, it's always a good idea to find out why. The employee may think the request is unreasonable or dangerous. If danger is the issue, then corrective measures should be taken to fix or correct the problem so that an employee can work in an environment that is safe and secure. You may also want to determine if the employee has a legitimate gripe concerning how reasonable an assignment is. In certain situations, the human resource department may have to get involved.

    Corrective Actions

    • When all efforts have been made to resolve the problem and an employee continues with insubordinate behavior, then corrective actions should take place. Sometimes an employee is given a verbal warning about her behavior. If the verbal warning does not correct the problem, then a written warning may be necessary which outlines the specific infractions along with additional remedies that will be implemented if the problem is not corrected. Corrective action can take the form of a suspension without pay. An employee may be given time off to think over her actions. If there is no chance of correcting the behavior, then an employee may have to be terminated.

    Communication

    • There are some employees who only need effective communication to wipe out the problem. If you spell out the problem and the consequences and let him know he is not being a team player, some employees will stop the adversarial behavior immediately.

    Warning

    • There are some signs that an employee will eventually become insubordinate. If an employee is consistently late to work and returns late from break and lunch, then she is saying that she doesn't respect management or the company. Sometimes an employee is not completely in tune with her work assignments. She may spend a large amount of time surfing the Internet or chatting with co-workers and complaining about the organization. An employee who is disgruntled and not happy could eventually become insubordinate.
