IBS & Stomach Pain

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common condition that affects approximately one in five adults. The symptoms of IBS can closely mimic the symptoms of other gastrointestinal disorders. However, unlike conditions such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, IBS doesn't damage the digestive tract or lead to severe complications. However, people living with IBS normally experience abdominal cramping or stomach pain. And in severe cases, pain can interfere with everyday routines.

  1. Symptoms

    • The most common symptom of irritable bowel syndrome is stomach pain or abdominal cramping. This symptom often develops after eating certain meals, and it's commonly caused by excessive gas in the intestinal tract. Additionally, IBS sufferers typically deal with occasional bouts of constipation or diarrhea and abdominal bloating.

    Causes/Risk Factors

    • Although the exact cause of IBS and stomach pain is unknown, certain factors play a role in the condition, which can trigger or worsen existing symptoms. If living with IBS, eliminating problem foods from your diet can alleviate stomach pain and other related symptoms. Problem foods such as carbonated beverages, spicy foods, artificial sweeteners and dairy products can bring on gas, bloating, diarrhea, constipation and cramping.

    Take Fiber Supplements

    • Constipation is a common symptom of IBS. And infrequent bowel movements result in intestinal gas and stomach pain. Alleviating stomach pain can be as simple as increasing your fiber intake. Fiber-rich foods include fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Eat between 20 and 35 grams a day, or take a supplement to promote a healthy digestive tract.

    Digestive Enzyme

    • Dairy products are another IBS trigger. Eating certain foods and drinking certain beverages such as milk, cheese, yogurt and ice cream can produce diarrhea or painful stomach cramps. Get rid of stomach discomfort by replacing regular milk with soy products or lactose-free milk. If you can't live without your favorite dairy products, take a digestive enzyme supplement before consuming dairy.

    Get Rid of Stress

    • Stress, worry and nervousness also trigger IBS symptoms. But learning how to cope with stressful situations restores bowel health and stops stomach pain. When you are dealing with emotional problems, your digestive tract responds by increasing or slowing intestinal contractions. This change often results in constipation or diarrhea, which both lead to stomach pain. Learning how to relax, doing regular exercise or taking a warm bath can ease your body and mind, and regulate intestinal contractions.
