Where to track down your GED depends partly on where you completed the requirements and received the GED and partly on how long ago you received it. Depending on how long ago you received a GED, the location at which you received the degree may no longer exist or the records may no longer be on file.

  1. Where and How Long Ago

    • The first place to check is the location or authority that administered the testing and awarded you the GED. The authority--a high school or local community college, for example--usually keeps its records for a considerable period of time and should be able to provide a copy of the original. Note, however, it is very difficult to receive a duplicate of your GED. Many states like Pennsylvania, for example, will not issue a duplicate.

    If Difficulties Arise

    • GEDs are filed with the Department of Education of the state in which you took and successfully completed the GED requirements. Usually, a phone call to the DOE will direct you to the office in which records are kept. Most departments of education have websites where you can download and print request forms that will require you provide pertinent information such as your birth date, when and where you took the test and your Social Security number. However, again in states like Pennsylvania, you will not receive a duplicate of the GED but rather transcripts that will show you satisfactorily completed the requirements for obtaining a GED.

    There is Usually a Fee

    • Most states require a nominal fee of $3 to $6 for either providing a copy of your GED certificate or a copy of the transcripts. Some states charge a fee that might be higher.

    GEDs on the Internet

    • Not surprisingly, copies of GEDs obtained online are available as well. If this is where you obtained your GED and need another copy, there is usually no problem. Contact the online firm that administered the test and follow its directions on how to obtain a copy. Expect to prove your identity either by Social Security number, birth certificate copy or both. And expect to pay a higher fee for a copy than you would with a state-sponsored institution.

    Details, Details

    • When submitting your request for a duplicate or transcripts, take the time to fill out the request forms completely and accurately. This will affect the amount of time it will take for you to get your duplicate or transcripts.
