Side Effects of Revolution for Dogs

Revolution (selamectin) works as a parasite preventative for dogs (and cats) using the "spot-on" application method. You can only obtain Revolution from a veterinarian with a prescription. You apply Revolution once a month to your dog's skins just above the shoulder blades. This simply monthly application can protect your dog's health and life, because parasites, when left untreated, can cause disease and even death.

  1. Significance

    • Canine parasites, when left untreated, can cause severe itching for your dog, but more significantly, infection and sickness that can be fatal to your dog. The effects of parasites can vary. For example, a severe flea infestation in one dog may simply cause severe itching, but other dogs may lose hair or develop an infection and, if not well cared for, lose so much blood that they die.

    Function

    • Revolution (selamectin) is the first ever FDA-approved parasiticide of its kind that claims to prevent heartworm disease, kill fleas and prevent the hatching of flea eggs. It also treats ear mites and mange, and control ticks. It is a vital step in maintaining your dog's overall health and well-being.

    Application Instructions

    • Apply the Revolution liquid once a month to your dog's skins just above the shoulder blades for maximum effectiveness. Hold the Revolution tube upright and all of the liquid settles to the bottom, then press down the cap until you hear a click to open. Part your dog's hair at the base of the neck and apply Revolution to the exposed skin until the tube is empty, dragging the tube along the surface of the skin as you apply. The parasiticide is not greasy, dries quickly and is waterfast. However, you should wait at least 2 hours before bathing your dog after an application.

    Side Effects

    • Less than 1 percent of dogs under the protection of Revolution suffer from stomach upset. In rare cases the specific dosage listed may be too strong for dogs that are on the line for weight requirements. Contact your veterinarian or an emergency veterinary clinic immediately if your dog vomits more than two times in a short time frame, is lethargic (inactive), shows signs of inability to move, or has nose bleeds or seizures. While these can all be signs of a toxic reaction to the application of Revolution, there are other possible factors. Regardless of the actual cause, any of these symptoms needs immediate medical attention.

    Prevention/Solution

    • Consult a veterinarian before deciding to use of Revolution on your dog. The determination of a Revolution dosage is by the dog's weight, with each dosage size typically applicable to a specific weight range. If your dog teeters between two weight ranges (and, therefore, two different dosage sizes of Revolution), the recommendation is to use the smaller dosage to be safe. Additionally, you should never use Revolution on a dog that is sick, weak or underweight for any reason, as it can cause adverse reactions and possibly death.
