Phases of the Moon and Myth

As an ever-changing part of our skies, the moon has inspired countless myths through the ages. Its rotating phases were once thought to influence mental illness, fertility, crop growth, prosperity, childbirth and more. Many still believe these myths today. Although no one can dispute the effect of the moon's waxing and waning on tides, science is still skeptical about the ability of this celestial neighbor to influence your haircut or birthday.

  1. Waxing Moon

    • The moon cycles from being completely draped in shadow to a bright, round fullness approximately every 30 days. From the darkest point, known as a new moon, the moon begins to grow, or wax, through its cycle, to a first-quarter crescent, then a half-profile, and finally appearing as a full moon. A waxing moon propels many lunar bits of folklore, from a fear of burying the dead or building with planks and nails. But there are also positive aspects of these myths, such as expecting prosperity from a new moon, or harvesting crops as the moonlight grows.

    Waning Moon

    • Once the moon turns full, it begins a phase of apparently shrinking to the naked eye, or waning, as its orbital angle shadows the visible surface. A waning moon phase is thought to be a good time to break habits, perform cleaning chores, cut hair, wean animals and other tasks requiring people to let go of possessions or ideas. Those who include the moon in their faith, such as Wiccans or Pagans, believe a waning moon is a time to purge negativity or sickness from their lives.

    Full Moon

    • Perhaps no phase carries as much mythology as the full moon. Ancient folk believed that the moon's light could cause or increase insanity and violent behavior. In fact, the word 'lunacy' has its origins in this belief, although there is no scientific evidence to back it up. Werewolves were thought to transform during the full moon, and many believe a full moon brings extra mojo to relationships and even procreation.

    Human Reproduction

    • Courting, mating and childbirth myths are heavily intertwined with moon phases; just the act of a female sleeping under the full moon's rays was thought to make her magically with child. Love spells by lonely hearts are said to be performed under the full moon, and a waxing or full moon is believed to bring on labor pains.

    Gardening and Farming

    • Another activity that brings out moon myths is gardening. Almanacs still list the best days according to moon phases for planting, harvesting and canning. Many farmers believe bringing in the hay or weeding should be done during the waning days, while planting crops should be done during a waxing moon phase. Canning, a labor-intensive process to preserve vegetables, is believed to work best during a waning moon.
