Definition of Duvet Covers
A duvet cover (pronounced du-VAY) is a removable cover that encloses a comforter. Duvet covers can be found at stores that sell bedding, and they come in many sizes, twin to king. Duvet covers are most commonly used to spare a buyer from having to buy and store multiple comforters and are often used with comforter made of down. Does this Spark an idea?

Origins of the Duvet Cover
-
The duvet cover comes from the word "duvet," a french word meaning a bag filled with some kind of stuffing--often either feathers, down or wool--to be used for warmth. Duvet, in the modern English vernacular, means comforter. Duvet covers were developed due to the fact that feather duvets--or comforters--cannot generally be washed, as washing a feather or down comforter usually ruins the insides. Nowadays, many comforters can be washed, but using a duvet cover is easier because the cover can be washed with the regular sheets, thus reducing the amount of laundry loads to be completed.
Reasons for Using a Duvet Cover
-
The duvet cover has several useful purposes. First, it is a less expensive way to change the decor of a room without buying a whole new comforter. Second, caring for a duvet cover and washing one is much easier than it is to wash and care for a comforter. In addition, the duvet cover is easier to store than a traditional comforter, because it is a fraction of the thickness.

Functions and Features of the Duvet Cover
-
The duvet cover is essentially two pieces of cloth sewn together on three sides and left open on one side to be fastened by buttons, snaps, ties or a zipper. The materials of the duvet cover vary, but they generally are made of the same materials as blankets. Duvet covers come in the same shapes and sizes as other bedding. If you have a queen-sized bed, choose a queen-sized duvet cover.
Making Your Own Duvet Cover
-
Although duvet covers are less expensive than a full down comforter, they still can be pricey. One way to cut down on the expense is to sew your own duvet cover. The main expense, if you decide to make your own duvet cover, is the cost of the fabric, depending on what quality of fabric you choose. Detailed instructions on how to sew your own duvet cover are located in the Resources section of this article.
Caring for a Duvet Cover
-
A duvet cover can be cared for in the same way as your other regular bedding and can be put in the wash with pillowcases, blankets and sheets. Some duvet covers are more delicate than others, just as some sheets, pillowscases and blankets might be more delicate than others. There is no need to put a tennis ball in the wash, as duvet covers themselves are not stuffed.
