Drug Testing by Hair Analysis

Drug testing through hair follicle evaluation is one of the most effective ways to discover drug use in a person. Drugs stay in the hair for up to 90 days, so taking strands of hair and testing for drug metabolites may produce positive results in even occasional drug users. Hair samples are taken and sent to a lab where results are given within a couple of days.

  1. Hair Growth

    • The average length hair grows is approximately half an inch per month. Since drugs are present in the hair for approximately 90 days, the hair grows 1.5 inches while keeping metabolites. When taking hair samples, the hair is removed at the follicle. As long as samples are removed properly, existence of drugs in a hair follicle test means the drugs were consumed within three months of testing.

    Process

    • The hardest part of the process is obtaining hair samples. Approximately 50 strands are suggested for testing. Cut the hair as close to the root as possible. Obtain a lab package kit from a testing company. Place the strands of hair in the package and send it to the lab. You are then able to log in to the testing company's Web site to view results.

Difference from Urine and Saliva Tests

    • Because metabolites grow on the hair, the drug tests are able to detect byproducts for 90 days. When using urine or saliva, the drug metabolites are excreted from the body rapidly. Drugs such as cocaine, methamphetamines and opiates are excreted from the urine within 72 hours. Removal of drug metabolites is processed within 48 hours in saliva.

    Recreational Use vs. Heavy Use

    • Laboratory results show the extent of metabolite quantity in the hair samples. People who have lower amounts may only use their drug of choice occasionally. For instance, the results for amphetamine use between 500-2500 pg/mg is indicative of recreational use. Heavy amphetamine users have results of 2500-7500 pg/mg in the hair follicles.

    Uses

    • Hair analysis testing is typically used by employers and parents concerned with drug use. Employers that have a no-drug policy can use hair analysis to ensure potential employees are drug-free. Parents who are concerned with their child's possible drug use can also use hair analysis. The test results are private, so parents can discreetly work with children who have positive tests by finding therapy and rehabilitation treatment.
