Drug testing through hair follicle evaluation is one of the most effective ways to discover drug use in a person. The average length hair grows is approximately half an inch per month. Since drugs are present in the hair for approximately 90 days, the hair grows 1.5 inches while keeping metabolites. Drugs such as cocaine, methamphetamines and opiates are excreted from the urine within 72 hours. Removal of drug metabolites is processed within 48 hours in saliva.
Recreational Use vs. Heavy Use

Laboratory results show the extent of metabolite quantity in the hair samples. People who have lower amounts may only use their drug of choice occasionally. For instance, the results for amphetamine use between 500-2500 pg/mg is indicative of recreational use. Heavy amphetamine users have results of 2500-7500 pg/mg in the hair follicles.
