Fun Ideas for a DJ at a Wedding Reception
The key to a wedding reception with a party atmosphere is a DJ who knows how to build energy through music. It doesn't have to be stereotypical either, the Chicken Dance and the Macarena are not necessarily the best ways to celebrate the new couple's marriage. The best DJs surprise attendees and take requests.

Video DJ
-
If you have a projector, you can actually play the music videos for the reception songs. This doesn't have to be every song of the reception, but occasionally projecting images will liven up the celebration. When music videos aren't playing, hook up a live camera to the dance floor. Most people love to smile at the camera and dance for it.
Work the Whole Wedding
-
To keep the flow moving from beginning to end, play music right from the start. Although a DJ is usually the staple of the after-dinner dance party, a talented DJ can work through an entire wedding. From the music before the ceremony all the way until the end, find the music that best suits each moment of a wedding, making attendees feel more connected to the moment through the ongoing music.

Mix Old and New Music
-
Play a mix of the new and old. Outkast's "Hey Ya" is still fun, but throw in Montell Jordan's "This is How We Do It" for an old school sing along. Kanye West might get just as many people dancing as Ray Charles. The main point: don't think that there's one way to do a wedding reception. If you have Traktor DJ software, mix songs together for seamless flows.
Interject Suggestions
-
Have a microphone so you can tell the audience to get ready for certain dances in between songs. This is especially helpful when an activity like the dollar dance is about to take place, because you can announce what's happening next. But even occasionally coming on the mic with energy in your voice will raise the "fun level." Suggesting "This next one is for the single ladies!" and then playing a Beyonce song or "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" will get the ladies on the dance floor.
Take Requests
-
Establish an Internet connection so you can play any request you receive. While one song is playing, you can find the requested song on the Internet and download it. If you are prompt, the request should be playing 10 minutes later. People get excited when their requests gets played, and the crowd can feed off of this energy. Plus, taking requests keeps the party spontaneous.
