What Is the Daytona One Stop Career Center?

Whether you're looking for career advice, scholarship assistance, or help getting off of the unemployment merry-go-round, the Daytona One Stop Career Center is the place to go. Operated by the Volusia-Flagler Workforce Development Board's Center for Business Excellence, the center provides a formidable array of counseling, reference resources, even online access, complimentary, and freely available to the public from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. weekdays.

  1. Career Zone

    • To help you in the process of finding and applying for work, the center offers a freely available bank of computers with Internet access, as well as copiers, fax machines and telephones. Assistance is available to help you get online and find what you need. If it's inconvenient to get to the center, three satellite locations in the Daytona Beach area offer Internet access for center users.

    Information Café

    • The center maintains an up-to-date resource lending library of books and videos with information and techniques for furthering your career goals or school search.

    Workshops

    • The center maintains a regular schedule of workshops for your edification, including the basic "Next Steps to Success" course which introduces the center's functions. Other classes include such topics as "Interviewing Skills for the 21st Century," "7 Steps to Promoting Yourself Resume and Cover Letter Writing," and a series of Introduction to computer courses. One special workshop is entirely devoted to finding scholarship money for certain courses that are available based on a state mandated subject matter list.

    Career Planning and Placement

    • If you don't know what you want to do, the center provides career planning counseling along with assessment tools to analyze your interests and aptitudes. If you have had a professional career, but are now out looking, professional services counseling is provided for those who made over $35,000 a year; have a four-year degree and have worked for five or more years.

The center also offers "Project Reconnect," aimed at helping ex-offenders return to the job marketplace. Several of the features of this program also are of use to anyone, such as the availability of federal bonding (up to $5000 for up to six months at no charge) and helping employers know that your hiring may make them eligible for federal work opportunity tax credits. For those with SSI and SSDI disabilities, the center can help obtain a social security "Ticket to Work." Assistance is available for veterans as well. To take advantage of any of these services, simply call for an appointment.

    Employ Florida

    • Employ Florida is the state's job search Website. When you first visit the center, they will tell you it is of first importance to register on this site, update your personal information, set up an online resume and complete the job-skills self assessment. If you are seeking unemployment compensation from the state this is even more important, because of the state's requirements that you actively seek employment while collecting unemployment money.

The system is very comprehensive and is used by employers, who with access to your resume and job skills, can find the perfect person to fill any position they may want. The state also requires you to attend the "Next Step to Success" workshop in order to continue to be eligible for funds, and the presenter will file a report of your attendance.
