Homemade Engine-Driven Bicycles

There are many ways one can customize a pedal bike into a motorized bicycle. Some kits exist that can give your bicycle the power of an electric moped. However, there are a few different ways you can outfit your bike with a hard powered motor that will send your bike zipping along like the old style lawnmower motor powered go carts from childhood.

  1. Chainsaw Engine

    • The most logical way seems to outfit a chainsaw engine. Both the chainsaw and your bicycle run on the power of the chain. All you would need to do is to learn how to stabilize the engine on the back of the bike, find the correct chain that will fit both the chainsaw and the back wheel and do a bit of testing before it goes out on the road. Of course, it will be a little more complicated than that, but that's the basic idea.

    Safety Problems

    • Some problems that may arise with a chainsaw motor powered bike would be the fact that it would get very hot very fast. If you have the misfortune to accidentally touch the motor while it's running, it could mean some burnt legs at the least.

    Fuel Problems

    • Also take into consideration the fact that you will need fuel and a way to set the throttle from your handle bars so you can judge just how fast you will go. Most of these problems can be settled with a bike gear shifter (the technology of a throttle on a chainsaw is very similar to a gear shift on a bike).

    Benefits

    • The most obvious benefit is the fact that instead of having to exert yourself while riding, you can simply start up your chainsaw motor and go. Depending on the power of the motor, you can get your bike to go quite fast.

    Alternatives

    • Other alternatives for homemade bike engines include weed eaters and leaf blowers. However, leaf blowers are a bit rarer. If you want to stay away from fuel, you can always try to hook up an electric motor to your bike, but it will need to be strong enough to propel the bike with you on it.
