Protein diet drinks are used as meal replacements or nutritional supplements. If a person is using protein diet drinks in order to lose weight or maintain the weight once the weight-loss goal has been reached, he or she may replace one or two meals a day with a protein diet drink.
Those who use protein diet drinks as part of their workout or body-building routine will sometimes supplement regular meals with protein diet drinks, or may ingest them before beginning their physical fitness regimen.
People who for one reason or another cannot eat solid or even soft food will often use protein diet drinks as a total meal replacement. Patients who are undergoing chemotherapy, for example, or who are experiencing difficulty chewing, swallowing or otherwise eating normally due to other circumstances can greatly benefit from protein diet drinks, as they can receive at least some of the nutrition they need. -
Protein diet drinks come in powder and liquid form. The powder form can be added to any type of liquid. One very popular way of adding powdered protein diet drink mix to liquid is to mix it in with a fruit smoothie. The powder itself can have a grainy texture, and a unique taste; therefore, adding it to fruit and milk or juice that is being blended together makes it easier to drink.
Protein diet drink powder can also be sprinkled on or added to food, such as oatmeal, cereal or canned or frozen fruit.
Liquid protein diet drinks are either ready to drink straight from the container, or concentrated. If they are concentrated, they need to be mixed in equal parts with water, milk or juice. -
Using a protein diet drink in place of a meal can have a two-fold effect. It will help alleviate feelings of hunger until the dieter (who is wanting to lose or maintain weight) can take the time to eat a sensible meal or snack. The person who is unable to eat a regular meal will feel (and know) that he or she has taken nourishment.
For body builders, the extra protein causes elevation of energy levels, as well as stimulating the body to build additional muscle mass. -
Protein diet drinks help with weight loss, weight maintenance and appetite control. Those who are using protein diet drinks for nutritional supplementation because they are unable to eat will not have to worry about having to try to eat in the conventional way, thus alleviating pain or discomfort.
Protein diet drinks are beneficial for providing a more productive workout session. - Too much protein can be harmful in the long run, especially to the kidneys, as they must process and secrete excess protein that is not used by the body. Using protein diet drinks exclusively to lose weight can result in a person not receiving adequate nutrition, which can have detrimental effects on one's physical health. Only two meals a day, at the most, should be replaced.
