The Best Bedtime Foods for a Diabetic

Many diabetics choose to eat a snack before bedtime. Many diabetics do this because they are worried about their blood glucose levels during the night. One of the most important things for a diabetic to do is to make sure that his blood glucose level remains stable during the day and night. In order to do this it is sometimes a wise thing to have a good healthy bedtime snack. Consult with your doctor to see what blood sugar testing target is right for you so that you can find which bedtime snacks will help maintain your blood sugar levels.

  1. Protein

    • Diabetics definitely need protein in their bedtime snacks. This is so that the blood sugar levels are steady through the night. Protein is best for keeping blood sugar levels stable. Soy and lentils are good sources of protein. A tiny plate of poultry or fish is good too. The best bedtime snack of protein is 2 tbsp. of nuts.

    Fruit

    • A piece of fruit that is between 10 and 20 carbs is usually a good bedtime snack. Fruit is a really good source of vitamins. The best fruit for a diabetic to have is an apple. This is because apples have pectin in them. This helps a person's body detoxify. Pomegranates, plums, pears, a couple strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and raspberries are also good fruits for a diabetic to eat. Diabetics should avoid bananas, grapes, oranges, watermelons, and mangos because of the high sugar in them.

    Oatmeal

    • Oatmeal is a great bedtime snack as long as it is not sweetened. It is great for fiber. Fiber is a great source for helping to keep blood sugar levels low. Oatmeal also digests at a slow rate which helps blood sugar levels too.

    Cereal

    • One of the best bedtime snacks for a diabetic is cereal. A cup of healthy cereal is great for a diabetic to help maintain sugar levels. All bran is a good choice of cereal to have as a snack. A diabetic can eat the cereal dry or have it with some low fat milk.

    Other Snacks

    • There are other snacks that are good for a diabetic to have as a bedtime snack. A simple glass of milk is a good option. Another option is a slice of whole grain toast with a bit of peanut butter on it. Yogurt is a great bedtime snack as well. The important thing always to do is read labels to make sure that your bedtime snack is low in carbs and high in fiber so that you keep your blood glucose levels at a good level.
