What Qualifications Are Needed to Become a Personal Trainer?
According to the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), a personal trainer develops and implements an individualized approach to exercise leadership for those that are healthy and/or medically cleared to exercise. A wide range of skills and knowledge is necessary to meet this definition.
-
Education
-
It's become a universal standard, in the fitness industry, that an individual needs a personal training certification from a reputable organization to become a professional personal trainer. Even 4-year college degrees are being phased out for certifications by ACSM, American Council on Exercise (ACE) and the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM; see References). These certifications are becoming so in-depth and up-to-date on the latest fitness, health and exercise science information that they are being accepted as the standard for competence as a personal trainer.
Experience
-
Experience in exercise, fitness and sports are key qualifications for becoming a personal trainer. The value of this experience is immeasurable because it provides an in-depth understanding that books can't provide. It's a sense of relation to your potential client because you have participated in similar physical activities.
-
Effective Communication
-
Unfortunately, education and experience can only go so far. If you are unable to effectively communicate the applications of your knowledge, then you will not be successful. You have to be able to instruct, share and communicate on a level that your potential client will be able to understand. You must become a "people person."
Effective Listening
-
Effective listening is crucial for obtaining vital information from your client. You must be able to clearly define and specify information that the client gives you by asking the appropriate questions. Not only are you able to accomplish your responsibilities, but the client will feel as if you really pay attention.
Desire
-
You must have a sincere desire for helping others. Those who become a personal trainer just for the money usually fade away quickly because people can see the "used-car salesman" attitude. If you are sincere and genuine, your potential clients can see that desire and will be drawn to it.
Lifestyle
-
In the end, the greatest qualification of all is the lifestyle that you live. To be successful at instructing others, it must stem from your own practices. When potential clients see you living what you teach and preach, they develop more confidence and trust in your abilities to help them. Your lifestyle will lead by example, and others will truly follow.
