Information on Lowrider Bikes

Lowrider bikes were inspired by lowrider-style cars in that they require the user to sit lower on the seat. They have certain distinct features--such as banana seats, high handlebars and Daytona Rims--that categorize them as lowrider bikes.

    Banana Seats

  1. These are long seats that on typical bikes would enable a second person to ride the bike--in theory. But, in these cases, the banana seat supports the lowrider design so the rider can sit comfortably.
  2. Ape Handlebars

  3. Ape handlebars are high above the mount where they would normally be on a mountain bike. They are referred to as ape handlebars because one's hand has to drape over them in resemblance to an ape's hand.
  4. Daytona Rims

  5. Daytona rims are similar to car rims with multiple spokes. The spokes on lowrider bikes, unlike typical bike rims, do not cross one another. There also tend to be many more spokes on this style of rim.
  6. Spring Forks

  7. Instead of employing typical hydraulic shocks on the front of the bike, many lowriders will use older spring-loaded shocks. These may not get the same kind of bounce as hydraulic, but you probably don't want to bounce much with a lowrider bike.
  8. Fenders

  9. Many bikes nowadays do not come with fenders for aerodynamic reasons. Lowrider bikes, however, do employ both front and back fenders. They are usually chromed up and will keep the rest of the bike safe from dirt or debris that may be kicked up on a ride.
