Job Coach Qualifications
Job coaches, or employment specialists, are trained professionals whose primary duties revolve around all-things employment. Job coaches usually work with adolescents, college students, people with disabilities, or any many other specialized programs where clients need assistance gaining and retaining employment. Job coaches often direct candidates to job openings by providing them with the necessary skills to survive in the workplace. They deliver information to their clients such as employability skills training, resume and cover letter writing tips, skills and interests assessments, interview strategies and job search tools. In some instances, a job coach is trained to perform these duties--salaries will vary from state to state and there are no official certifications or degrees needed to work as a job coach. However, there are qualifications that are imperative to have before seeking employment as a job coach.
-
Experience in the Field
-
Having work-related experience is the number one qualification of being a job coach. Because there are employment specialist positions in just about every field--public education, communications, social work, athletics, post-secondary education, medical and administrative, just to name a few--many organizations hire job coaches to assist with recruiting and retaining employees. Having extensive experience as a job coach will help you to land a desirable position. What happens if you are just starting? You have no experience as a job coach, but the idea of helping others to attain work excites you? Good news--there is a way to get in. If you have experience in a particular field, you can use that experience to become a job coach as well. For example, if you have seven years of teaching high school English--you know the content, pedagogy, and you've also assisted the school district with new teacher retention--you could surely be a shoe-in for a job coach position with your local district. If you are lacking experience as a job coach and you have minimal experience in your own field, signing up for coaching committees, HR workshops, and implementing job-preparedness workshops at your current place of employment helps as well.
There is no "I" in Team
-
Working in this field requires a "team player" attitude. One of the core responsibilities of a job coach requires heavy interaction with many different members of organizations and community stakeholders--not to mention the constant interaction with clients. Adjusting to different styles of learning and the ability to accommodate others' needs is a quality that many employers require of the job coach.
-
Client-Friendly Attitude
-
As a job coach or employment specialist, you must be patient and adaptive. Depending on where you give your job coach services, you will have a wide range of clients who need an understanding and caring job coach to help them. Especially those who work with students, the low-income population, people with disabilities, ex-convicts and the incarcerated, there must be a high level of tolerance and adaptability. The employment specialist must know how to deal specifically with these groups of people and not show any bias toward clients for any reason.
Knowledgable of Employment Trends
-
Another necessary qualification of an employment coach is knowing the current employment trends. Job coaches should be familiar with all employability factors such as contemporary technology, employment skills tests, resume writing (that matches a specific career path) and job outlooks for the present year. Being knowledgeable in employment trends will show the client that you are skilled enough to teach them the ropes. There is nothing worse than a job coach who cannot emphasize the proper techniques for getting and retaining work. That's an easy way to lose clients and credibility in your career.
A Proven Track Record
-
Clients that are satisfied with your work will recommend you to other clients. It's as simple as that. If you do outstanding work, you will be noticed in your field. Having a proven track record looks great on your resume and definitely adds to your growing list of qualifications in the field.
