Sleep Aids for Dogs

Dogs suffer from insomnia just as people do. And, just as with people, the reasons are not always clear. Perhaps a change in his home environment is disturbing him. Even something as innocuous as a furniture placement change can disrupt his sense of place and cause him distress. The careful dog parent will observe variations in her dog's sleep patterns and take steps to reintroduce restful sleep to the dog's daily routine.

  1. Proper Diet

    • Make sure your dog consistently enjoys a well-balanced diet served at the same time or times each day, so long as mealtime is not right before bedtime. Dogs are typically more energetic after they eat and will not be eager to settle down if you feed him soon before you turn in for the night.

    Exercise

    • Too much stored energy means your dog will have a hard time settling down at night. Set up a daily exercise regimen to burn off that energy and stick to it. A little active playtime right before bed will further tire him out and get him in the mood for bedtime.

    Valerian Root Extract

    • Valerian root extract is a time-honored herbal remedy used to relieve insomnia. It produces a mild calming effect and comes in pill, powder or liquid form or as a dried herb for infusion into a tea. Consult with a veterinary herbalist for proper dosing instructions.

    Music

    • Music CDs with calming songs and sound effects are available if you wish to lull your dog to sleep with soothing sounds. The spiritual resonance and relaxing qualities of New Age music work best.

    Sleeping Environment

    • Your dog will be more comfortable and more willing to settle down if he has a cozy dog bed or crate area with soft pillow or bedding to look forward to. Keep his sleep area warm and dry and free from the cold and damp. A chilled environment will cause restlessness.
