Definition of Laptop Computer

In today's technology driven workplace, computers have become an extremely essential tool for many, if not most, professions. Laptop computers though have become extremely popular for their portability, adaptability and convenience for temporary office spaces. The definition of a laptop computer is a broader subject than some people might think.

    Definition

  1. A laptop computer is a battery or AC-powered computer (laptops usually come with adapter plugs for AC power drawn from a wall socket), which is smaller than a briefcase and is easily transportable. Laptops generally weigh less than five pounds and are less than 3 inches in thickness when closed.
  2. Terms

  3. Laptop computers go by a variety of other names depending on who is talking about them. Manufacturers often call laptop computers notebook computers, usually because of their small size. They're known as portable workstations in some professions, due to the fact that they're issued to employees without permanent work places. And the newest generation of laptop computers are referred to as netbook computers, due to the fact that they're even smaller than their forebears, and are sometimes the size of a large novel.
  4. Cost

  5. Laptop computers are always more expensive than desktop computers with the same capabilities. The reason for this is that laptops are much smaller, and therefore don't have room for the same hardware as a larger, desktop computer. So, new technology must be invented which uses smaller implements to achieve the same effect.
  6. Wireless Technology

  7. One of the major components of laptops now is that they often utilize wireless technology. This is quite possibly the biggest advantage of a laptop computer. The reason a person will use a laptop over a desktop, all other things being equal, is that it's portable. If that portability is made even more convenient through the elimination of wires and plugs, particularly in the case of Internet access, then that laptop becomes an even more effective tool.
  8. The Norm

  9. Though desktop computers are often more powerful than laptop computers, and can support a larger variety of features, laptop computers are becoming more and more popular. College students prefer them for use in class. Many professionals who have to work in the field from architects to soldiers, find that a mobile workstation is quite convenient. With the advances in technology, it isn't impossible to say that the power balance between desktop and laptop computers is still shifting in favor of the laptop.
