Grants for Schools in Florida

Florida Student Scholarship & Grant Programs is administered by the Office of Student Financial Assistance State Programs, which is a part of the Florida Department of Education. These programs are designed to help students obtain state-funded grants and scholarships for post-secondary education while providing information for students, parents and education professionals.   1. Access to Better Learning and Education

    • The Access to Better Learning and Education Grant Program provides assistance to Florida undergraduates at participating colleges and universities in the state. Some requirements are that the student must be a Florida resident and a U.S. citizen or an eligible noncitizen. The student must be enrolled for at least 12 credit hours per term, meet Florida's general state-aid requirements (see Resources), and not enroll in a program that ends in a theology or divinity degree. A minimum cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale also is required to reapply for the award. The amount for the academic year of 2009 to 2010 is $986.

    First Generation Matching

    • The First Generation Matching Grant Program is a needs-based grant for those whose parents did not graduate from college. This program requires the student be a Florida resident and a U.S. citizen or an eligible noncitizen. The student must be without a previous degree and have parents who did not graduate from college. The award amount is based on a needs assessment after financial aid, scholarships and other grants are determined.

    Florida Resident Access

    • The William L. Boyd IV Florida Resident Access Grant Program is for Florida undergraduates attending eligible nonprofit colleges and universities in the state. Requirements are that the student must be a Florida resident and a U.S. citizen or an eligible noncitizen, not have a previous degree, enroll for at least 12 credit hours per term, meet Florida's general state-aid requirements, and not enroll in a program that ends in a theology or divinity degree. To renew the grant, the student must keep a cumulative minimum of GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. The annual award for the 2009 to 2010 academic year is $2,529.

    Florida Student Assistance

    • The Florida Student Assistance Grant Program is for undergraduates who are in financial need and are studying at a participating educational institution. Requirements are that the student must be a Florida resident and a U.S. citizen or an eligible noncitizen, not have a previous degree, meet Florida's general state-aid requirements, and maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale. The program also requires that students study full time (12 credit hours minimum), three-quarters time (nine credit hours minimum) or half time (six credit hours minimum) per term. The minimum award amount is $200, with a maximum of $2,069 for the academic year of 2009 to 2010.

    Jose Marti Scholarship Challenge

    • The Jose Marti Scholarship Challenge Grant Fund provides financial assistance to students of Hispanic origin attending a participating public or private institution in Florida. Graduate students may apply, but priority is given to high school graduates. Requirements are that the student must be a Florida resident and a U.S. citizen or an eligible noncitizen; be of Spanish culture; be born or have a natural parent born in Mexico or a Hispanic country of the Caribbean, Central America and South America; be enrolled for at least 12 credit hours of undergraduate study or nine credit hours of graduate study; and have a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in high school or college. The award amount for the academic year of 2009 to 2010 is $2,000.
