Signs & Symptoms of Influenza A

Influenza A, also known as bird flu, avian flu, and H5N1, is a virus that is carried by birds. The Mayo Clinic reports that the virus has killed hundreds of millions of domestic and wild birds. The medical community is concerned that the virus may mutate and become easier for humans to contract and that it could cause a global outbreak, or a flu pandemic. To date, the individuals who have contracted influenza A had close contact with sick birds, though there are a few cases in which the virus was passed from person to person. Researchers are working on a vaccine they hope will protect humans in the event that the virus does mutate and becomes easier to contract. The symptoms of bird flu are similar to the symptoms caused by other strains of influenza.

  1. Symptom Onset

    • Like other types of flu, influenza A can strike suddenly and without warning. Symptoms can appear within hours. People may feel well and then become sick and bed ridden within hours of feeling the first few symptoms.

    Fever and Chills

    • Influenza A causes a fever. The fever can come on suddenly and it accompanies other flu symptoms. Fevers can become very high and produce chills. People who have contracted the virus can feel as if they are unable to get warm. Even if they have layers of clothing on and are beneath blankets they may still feel cold and can shake. Chills may be accompanied by periods of sweating as the body's fever fluctuates.

    Cough, Headache and Chest Pain

    • Influenza A can produce a dry, hacking cough that is unproductive. Headaches and chest discomfort are common. Individuals who develop breathing problems are at risk for developing respiratory distress and pneumonia, particularly the elderly and the very young.

    Fatigue and Body Pain

    • Influenza A will make a person feel terribly fatigued. Sleeping is common, though it is often interrupted sleep as the other symptoms can awaken the person. Body pain is common with this strain of flu. Small things such as sitting up, walking or turning over in bed can cause pain.

    Conjunctivitis

    • Unlike other strains of flu, influenza A is known for producing conjunctivitis, or pink eye. Individuals who develop conjunctivitis will need to be prescribed medicated drops to combat the infection. Conjunctivitis is highly contagious and can be spread from person to person.
