Andropause is a normal part of aging that affects only men and characterized by a decrease in the hormone androgen. Andropause is considered the male equivalent to menopause and sometimes referred to as "male menopause." Symptoms of andropause vary for each man, but there is a common set of symptoms that seem to affect most.

    Lethargy

  1. According to HealthCaresNet, fatigue and lethargy are often common symptoms of andropause. This decrease in energy can also lead to a decreased interest in sex and to weight gain due to sedentary behavior. Lethargy is more noticeable in men who are often physical. They will notice that the same types of physical activities they are used to require more effort or take longer than usual to do.
  2. Forgetfulness

  3. An inability to concentrate or basic forgetfulness is another symptom of andropause, says SafeMenopauseSolutions.com. Although anybody, especially as they age, may experience these symptoms, a severe case is something to watch out for. Men who find it increasingly difficult to focus or who notice a distinct change in their ability to remember things should consult their doctor.
  4. Anxiety and Depression

  5. AndropauseSpecialist.com states that because of a decrease in testosterone and other changes to the body, men going through andropause often experience anger, anxiety, depression, irritability, confusion and low self confidence. Events that were once easy to deal with may become difficult to handle during male menopause and efficiency and competence may decrease. These side effects of andropause often lead to feelings of self-loathing. Fortunately, these feelings can be treated with proper medication and therapy.
  6. Poor Sleep Quality

  7. Men suffering from andropause often experience a number of symptoms that affect their sleeping routine, according to SafeMenopauseSolutions.com. Hot flashes, night sweats and muscle aches are just a few of the symptoms experienced. A man may also experience difficulty falling asleep, and then once asleep may not sleep well. Restless nights may seem harmless, but they can lead to serious health issues because sleep is the only opportunity your body has to repair itself.
  8. Osteoporosis

  9. SafeMenopauseSolutions.com also states that an increased risk in bone fractures and osteoporosis can accompany andropause. Although a man's bone mass begins to decrease later in life than women typically do, andropause can speed this process up. Unfortunately, this symptom may not reveal itself until a fracture or break occurs, but if that happens (especially in men over the age of 35), it's a good idea to inquire about male menopause.
  10. Sexual Functions

  11. A man going through andropause may experience a decrease in sexual desire and in some cases may experience impotence, according to SafeMenopauseSolutions.com. As a result of a declining sex drive, men going through andropause will have sex less frequently than they did in their youth. On average, men who have sex three to four times a week in their 20s will reduce that number to one to two times a month in their 50s when going through andropause.
