Diet patches have an adhesive side that sticks to your skin. Diet medication that you would normally take in pill form is released gradually through your skin to suppress your appetite and increase your metabolism. There are a number of diet patches available, and they contain different active ingredients. All of these ingredients have side effects that you should know about.
Fucus vesiculosus is also known as bladder wrack. It is brown seaweed found in the ocean and contains iodine, which may prompt your thyroid gland to increase metabolism. According to the National Institutes of Health, its effectiveness and safety have not been evaluated. Side effects include thyroid problems, acne-type skin lesions, low blood sugar, abnormal bleeding, increased saliva, stomach irritation and a metallic taste.
Guarana is a plant from the Amazon and is used for increased energy as well as weight loss. It contains large amounts of caffeine. There is no evidence of the effectiveness and safety of guarana. Side effects can include increased urination, nausea and restlessness. Guarana may have adverse reactions when taken with clozapine, mexiletine or cimetidine.
Trypophane, an amino acid, is modified by your body into 5-HTP, then transformed into serotonin. Serotonin levels have an impact on your appetite, mood and sleep. According to Advanced Life and Life Extension, it is believed that sufficient serotonin levels can decrease your appetite. The effectiveness of using 5-HTP for weight loss has not been studied. Side effects may result when 5-HTP is taken with numerous other medications or if you have certain existing conditions. You should consult your physician before taking 5-HTP.
Yerba mate is an herb used as a diuretic, a stimulant and an antidepressant. Herbal supplements are not endorsed by the Food and Drug Administration for effectiveness and safety. Side effects of yerba mate may include nausea, vomiting, flushing, irritability, increased urination, headache and nervousness. Serious side effects include stomach pain, dark urine, yellowed eyes and skin, fever, irregular heartbeat and muscle twitching.
Using a diet patch may or may not be the answer for you to lose weight. The most sensible way to loss weight is to combine a healthy diet and exercise. Foods that have less fat and sugar can lower your caloric intake. Supplements that increase your metabolism may help, providing they are safe and do not have side effects. However, exercising to maintain muscle mass can increase your metabolism naturally. Consult your doctor before beginning any diet or exercise program.
