Brewers Yeast Allergy Symptoms

Brewers yeast, often used in the production of wine and beer, is a type of fungus made from hops and grains. This particular type of yeast is high in chromium, protein, and vitamins, making it a usually healthy nutritional additive. Unfortunately, there are individuals who are allergic to brewers yeast, and most find that they are allergic after drinking alcohol beverages. There are some clear symptoms to watch for.

  1. Migraines

    • Contrary to headaches, which are caused by inadequate blood flow to the brain, migraines are caused by too much blood flow. Because alcohol thins the blood, it is not uncommon for the blood flow to the brain to increase, thus causing a migraine headache. Obviously, not everyone who drinks alcohol experiences a migraine headache after a glass of beer or wine. Individuals with an allergy to brewers yeast will almost always get a migraine headache after the consumption of alcohol. This is one of the most common, and most severe, symptoms of a brewers yeast allergy.

    Stomach Irritation

    • While the overconsumption of alcohol often leads to stomach irritation, you will find yourself feeling gassy, bloated, and maybe even nauseated after drinking very little. It is not uncommon for those with a brewers yeast allergy to develop diarrhea as well.

    Fatigue

    • Brewers yeast will cause those with an allergy to experience a drop in blood sugar and increase in the mineral chromium, both of which can cause a person to feel very tired. If you suddenly begin to feel fatigued after drinking alcohol, drink a glass of orange juice or participate in an engaging activity (like a sport) that will help you to re-energize yourself.

    Itchy Skin

    • Individuals who are allergic to brewers yeast may begin to feel itchy after drinking an alcoholic beverage. You may or may not develop red spots or hives on the surface of your skin as well. This reaction is common amongst individuals allergic to wide variety of foods and will usually go away on its own.

    Genetic Symptoms

    • Individuals from Asian backgrounds are more likely to have a brewers yeast allergy than any other ethnic group. If you are of Asian descent and experience increased heart rate, flushing, or a drop in blood pressure after consuming alcohol, you may have an allergy to brewers yeast caused by genetics.

    Nasal Congestion

    • Alcohol causes the body to release histamines and some alcoholic beverages made with brewers yeast, including wine, already have a high histamine content. It's not uncommon for individuals drinking alcohol to experience nasal congestion, but if you are allergic to brewers yeast you will likely experience severe congestion every time you drink.
