What Are the Dangers of Tylenol PM?
Tylenol PM is a readily available non-prescription sleep aid. It is considered non-habit forming. Many sleep aids are dangerously addictive, yet Tylenol PM remains relatively safe to use without the fear of addiction. However, it is not without its risks and hazards.

Drug Profile
-
Tylenol PM is a pain reliever (acetaminophen) and a sleep aid (dyphenhydramine). It is used as a sedative. Most sedatives are addicting; however, neither of the two ingredients in Tylenol PM is addictive. Tylenol PM also enjoys the name recognition Tylenol receives from being on market shelves for over 50 years.
Benefits
-
Tylenol PM is available over-the-counter. It provides a safe combination drug for people to use in order to fall asleep. Since it is not habit forming, Tylenol PM has an advantage over other more powerful, but addicting, sedatives. Tylenol PM will also clear away the headaches or minor aches and pains that are present.

Side Effects
-
Although it is a commonly used sedative, monitoring for side effects is important. Many consumers of the antihistamine dyphenhydramine report grogginess the day after using the drug. Other side effects include dizziness, blurred vision and ringing in the ears. Some people suffer from an allergic reaction to Tylenol PM. Allergic symptoms may manifest in serious and dangerous side effects such as hives and swelling of the face and lips. Other serious side effects include a fast heartbeat, confusion and jaundice. Although most people do not experience any side effects with this drug, over a dozen side effects are listed in the packaged insert.
Danger Considerations
-
Even though Tylenol PM is not physically addictive, some people become psychologically dependent on the drug as a sleep aid. There are many anecdotal stories of people who suffered liver damage or death after taking Tylenol. In June 2009 an FDA panel voted to lower the recommended dosage of Tylenol and to require more stringent warnings and labeling. The panel advised restricting acetaminophen due to toxic overdoses of acetaminophen. Overdosing on acetaminophen by taking Tylenol PM in addition to other acetaminophen containing drugs does happen. It is important not to take Tylenol PM with any other acetaminophen containing medications.
Warnings
-
Do not take Tylenol PM while driving because it is likely to cause drowsiness. Alcohol increases the affects of Tylenol PM. Drinking alcohol while taking Tylenol PM increases the risk of liver damage. Serious liver damage can result from taking more than the recommended dose of Tylenol PM. Be cautious when taking Tylenol PM in conjunction with other medications. People who have addictive personalities or who use other medications should use this drug under a doctor's supervision.
