Reasons for Learning Science

Science is important for learning because it develops problem-solving skills. Problem solving and application of knowledge can be useful more than in just lab situations or classroom settings. If you want to fix a broken toaster, for example, science could help, but checking the switches, wires and plugs are examples of using problem solving. In this way, the set of skills necessary to analyze situations and think logically to find a solution are provided by science. Scientists apply these skills along with research techniques to build hypothesis, test them and then rebuild better hypothesis.

  1. Scientists

    • Scientists are the men and women responsible for the theories and understandings that are needed to make technology happen. Science is related to technology, but it is not necessarily technology. Furthermore, scientists don't need technology to better understand science. When an ecologist studies a bird, he makes observations and notes but requires nothing more than his eyes and something to write with. For this reason, science can work independently from technology, although technology can be used to aid scientists.

    Engineering

    • Engineering comes in many forms, from electronic engineering to chemical engineering; these processes rely on science and science-related fields to accomplish the tasks given. Often, these are specialties learned through years of university-level education, taking in several science-related classes like physics, chemistry, aeronautics, calculus and other high-level formula and equation-based classes. If science creates the theories for understanding how something works, engineering is the application of those theories into something more tangible.

    Required Studies

    • In most civilized societies, science is taught at the elementary level and is as much a standard as language composition or physical education. In high school, science credits are usually a requirement to graduate. In certain colleges, a semester or year of a science field (even "soft" science such as psychology) is mandatory, regardless of the degree.

    Salaries

    • Many science-related fields, especially in engineering and medical practices, have very high job entry-level pay and even higher pay scales. These reflect the time and energy required learning fields such as biochemistry, petroleum engineering or pharmacy, and because of the usefulness for these types of jobs, most university graduates have job security.

    Certainty

    • Science is the process of understanding phenomena. The science behind this understanding is not always true nor always right. It takes years, decades, even centuries of proof, hypothesis and evidence before a theory is finally accepted as a law. Einstein's Theory of Relativity, what killed the dinosaurs and how some early pyramids were constructed all remain theories because of insufficient evidence. Learning science and applying it can help the scientific community in many ways, because even the smallest contributions can help add data to a hypothesis or theory.
