About Rail Travel in the USA
Moving goods and traveling by rail is usually cheaper but slower than other forms of travel. Just as pool cars can cut down on travel expenses and pollution, trains also cut down on expenses and pollution by moving many passengers at once. Not all railways can deliver you to your exact destination, but popular routes do go between major cities. Railway travel in the United States can be a comfortable alternative that can also highlight the natural landscapes.

History
-
During the early nineteenth century, horse-drawn coaches and boats were the usual methods of moving people and goods. But with the expansion of the railroad industry, cities were linked as well as parts of the country. Railway travel has been attractive since its conception because of its constant speed and relative immunity to weather conditions.
Transcontinental Railroad
-
One of America's chief moments in railroad history came with the planning and completion of the first continental railroad linking the Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railroads at Promontory, Utah in 1869. This idea gained precedence during the 1850s, but was not an easy venture for Congress, survey teams and the railroad companies. As a result, the American East could be linked with the American West, and everything from goods, styles and fashions, to people could more easily move across the country.

Uses
-
Railcars and trains move along a railway in a single direction. Trains are usually powered by diesel engines, but may be electric. Freight cars are pulled behind the locomotive, or the engine car, which can contain any variety of goods, from resources like coal and oil, to commercial goods like vehicles and equipment. Train cars that carry people function the same way as other transportation methods.
Today
-
Not all railroads are in operation today, but many are still maintained and kept and still move goods and passengers by railcar. You can book tickets to travel by train to move around in a city like a taxi service, or to cross the country scenically. In San Francisco, cable cars are still used and act like working antiques. These perform the function of railcars but give travelers the pleasure of experiencing history as well.
Amtrak
-
Amtrak is a popular rail service that has many inter-city stations used to move people to and from different parts of the city. This can be useful if you enter a city by plane and want to reach your destination inexpensively. There are also routes from city to city like the Auto Train linking Washington D.C. to Orlando, and The Crescent linking New York to New Orleans. A list of its schedules and travel information can be found online at Amtrak or by phone at 800-USA-RAIL.
