Effects of Cabergoline

Cabergoline is a prescription medication used to treat conditions associated with the production of prolactin, a peptide hormone released from the pituitary gland. When too much prolactin is produced by this particular gland, women often experience menstrual problems, men can suffer from erectile dysfunctions, and both sexes may face a decrease in libido as well as possible fertility issues. By taking cabergoline, the secretion of prolactin is essentially blocked, allowing for an eventual return to a more balanced level of hormones within the body.

  1. Classification

    • Cabergoline falls under the classification of a dopamine agonist, which is a type of drug that stimulates the dopamine receptors in the body. Ordinarily, dopamine inhibits the normal secretion of the hormone prolactin. But when a tumor within the pituitary gland or another condition alters the production of prolactin, the natural level of dopamine may not be enough to counteract the increase of this particular hormone, causing problems to arise in the individual. A dopamine agonist like cabergoline encourages the production of dopamine to offset the upsurge in prolactin, thereby balancing hormone levels.

    Efficacy

    • After a period of about 6 months, cabergoline usually brings down the amount of prolactin in the system to a normal level. Restoring the hormonal balance should regulate menstruation in women, treat erectile dysfunctions in men and remedy certain fertility issues in both sexes caused by high levels of prolactin.

    Common Side Effects

    • As with almost any type of medication, cabergoline isn't without its side effects. For some people, they suffer nausea, constipation, dizziness, headaches and weakness due to the use of the particular drug. Normally, these side effects pass as the body acclimates to cabergoline. Though not as common as the side effects listed above, it is also possible to experience diarrhea, vomiting, gas, congestion, hot flashes, joint pain, muscle pain, sore throat, sleep disruptions and skin discomfort. These effects also pass as the body adjusts to the medication.

    Serious Side Effects

    • For other people, it is possible that cabergoline may cause serious side effects. Of these effects, both abdominal pain and vertigo are the more common. If you were to experience either of these sensations, you should contact your doctor immediately, as you may need an adjustment in the dosage or a complete change in medication.

    Rare Side Effects

    • Though rare, cabergoline has triggered other more serious side effects, including visual disturbances, loss of appetite, weight loss, unexplained weight gain, concentration issues, rapid heartbeat and a swelling in the hands, feet, ankles and legs. Contact your doctor immediately if these side effects arise.
