What Do You Put on a Tanning Bed Burn?
According to the National Institutes of Health, a burn from a tanning bed and a burn from the sun are treated identically. This is because the light that causes the burn, which is ultraviolet light, is the same whether it comes from the sun or the bulbs of a tanning bed.

Cold Compresses
-
When your skin burns, one of the most uncomfortable aspects is the hot, burning sensation. According to the Mayo Clinic, you can help alleviate that sensation by applying cold, wet towels or rags to the affected areas. This will also help with any swelling you may experience as a result of the tanning bed burn.
Lotions
-
Another source of discomfort from a tanning bed burn is itchy skin. This normally happens because the skin is excessively dry because of the burn. Both the National Institutes of Health and the Mayo Clinic recommend that people avoid lotions that contain antiseptic ingredients because those additives can further irritate the skin. Avoid scented lotions for the same reason. Hydrocortisone creams or lotions are a good choice, as are lotions that contain aloe.

Blisters
-
The National Institutes of Health recommends that no lotions, creams or topical ointments be used on parts of the burn that have blistered. Instead, a dry, loose bandage should be applied and changed if the blister pops. The Mayo Clinic advises against popping blisters that have formed since this can retard healing and increase the risk for infection.
Pain
-
The best solution for pain caused by a tanning bed burn is an over-the-counter pain medication. A cool shower or cold compresses may temporarily help with pain, but pain will usually return shortly after the treatment stops. An anti-inflammatory pain medication, such as ibuprofen, may also help with swelling caused by a tanning bed burn.
Warning
-
Avoid exposure to the sun and tanning beds until the burn has completely healed. Keep in mind that repeated exposure to ultraviolet light from either tanning beds or the sun increases the risks of developing skin cancer and cataracts. If you are experiencing severe pain or have a significant amount of blisters from your tanning bed burn, consult a doctor immediately.
