Hormone Replacement Therapy, also called HRT, is a treatment to relieve symptoms of menopause. These symptoms can include hot flashes and depression. Women who use hormone replacement therapy may be at an increased risk of certain types of cancers such as breast cancer. They may be at risk for stroke and heart disease as well, depending on their family history. Many women are trying alternatives treatments to hormone replacement therapies as a safer option.

    Soybeans

  1. Soybeans can be a beneficial alternative to hormone replacement therapy. They contain a compound that is similar to estrogen. For the most benefits, consuming a supplement that contains soy isoflavones will most closely mimic estrogen. Soybeans are high in fiber and protein and contain omega-3 fatty acids.
  2. Black Cohosh

  3. Black cohosh has a methanol extract that attaches itself to estrogen receptors. This levels the amount of estrogen found in the body. Black cohosh has been shown to reduce hot flashes and night sweats.
  4. Dong Quai

  5. Dong quai is an herb that can help with symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats. Dong quai should only be taken as advised by a doctor because taking too much of it can cause serious side effects such as bleeding, thinning of the blood and extreme sensitivity to sunlight. Those who take Dong quai on a regular basis also have a higher chance of developing skin cancer.
  6. Herbal Cocktails

  7. Some women use herbal cocktails as an alternative to hormone replacement therapies. Even though, there is no conclusive research on the benefits or risks, users claim that they experience relief from menopausal symptoms. Herbal cocktails can contain ingredients such as ginseng and flaxseed.
  8. St. John's Wort

  9. Hypericum perforatum L., or St. John's Wort, has been shown to help alleviate depression symptoms in menopausal woman. Dosages of 900 to 1,800 milligrams are the recommended daily amount. St. John's Wort is generally taken orally in pill, liquid or tea form. Side effects from using St. John's Wort include sensitivity to sunlight, high blood pressure, nausea and vomiting.
