Barbados is an island in the Caribbean Sea. Located roughly 100 miles east of the independent island nation of St. Lucia, Barbados is a very sought-after destination. Visitors will find colorful offshore fish, sugar cane plantations and miles of beautiful sandy beaches. Several major air carriers offer nonstop flights to Barbados from major American cities such as New York and Miami. These airlines include USAirways, American Airlines and Air Jamaica. Other airlines offer trips from other islands in the Caribbean such as Puerto Rico. Such airlines include American Eagle, an airline specializing in inter-island Caribbean travel. Flights from most American cities generally take 5 to 7 hours.

Barbados is a popular cruise ship destination. Many cruise ship lines visit Barbados each year. Cruise companies that travel to Barbados include Carnival Cruise Lines, Celebrity Cruises, Costa Cruises, Holland America, Royal Caribbean and Windjammer Cruises. Cruise ship stop at Bridgetown, the capital city of Barbados. Visitors may then embark to see the island. Many cruise lines tour the nearby islands of St. Lucia, Dominica, Martinique, Dominica and St. Vincent and the Grenadines as part of their itinerary.

Barbados has a mild climate with temperatures that rarely fall below the 60s even at night and during the winter months. This makes it ideal for swimming year-round. Many people visit the island to enjoy the fine sand and clear waters offshore. Accra Beach is in the southern part of the island. The beach has parking. Crane Beach has gentle surf, changing rooms and a lifeguard on duty. Sandy Beach has shallow waters and a lagoon that makes it great for kids. Mullins Beach is on the west coast of the island and has snorkeling and nearby chair and umbrella rentals as well as sanitary facilities.

Barbados attracts thousands of both amateur and professional golfers each year. Popular golf courses on the island include the public golf course at the Barbados Golf Club, the Country Club at Sandy Lane and the Royal Westmoreland Golf Club. All clubs charge daily fees.
What to Bring

The climate is very mild, so visitors need not pack many cool-weather items. Most restaurants allow patrons to dine even if dressed casually, but a skirt is still advisable for women and a pair of pants for men. Visitors may want to bring any specialized sporting equipment such as personalized swim goggles and golf clubs.
