Causes of Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is often referred to as dandruff. It is an inflammatory skin condition that causes flaky white and yellowish colored scales to form on the scalp and other oily sections of the body. It can itch and can even cause reddened skin. The flaking can be noticeable, frustrating and embarrassing. Often, treatments are available based on the location of the dermatitis and can help alleviate the symptoms you are experiencing.

  1. Causes

    • Seborrheic dermatitis is thought to be caused by an overproduction of skin oils and a yeast called malassezia. An exact cause is not actually known, according to the Mayo Clinic; however, there are certain factors that might play a role. Family history, stress, oily skin and obesity might be contributing factors. Some neurological conditions, such as head injury or stroke, also might be associated with seborrheic dermatitis.

    Symptoms

    • Some common symptoms are greasy or oily skin, lesions, itching, redness or scales. Flaking of the scales is commonly called dandruff and can be a very bothersome symptom of seborrheic dermatitis. It effects not only the scalp but can also effect the skin behind the ears and in body creases. On infants, it is typically called cradle cap and is harmless and noncontagious.

    Testing

    • Usually you are able to diagnose seborrheic dermatitis by looking at the appearance and placement of the skin lesions. This, along with signs of flaking, will help to make the final determination. If patches become very painful or red, or drain fluid or pus, you should contact your doctor for an appointment.

    Treatment

    • To begin treating the itching and flaking on the scalp, you can use any of the dandruff or medicated shampoos sold at local stores. You should shampoo daily and scrub your scalp to help loosen the scales. Once you have controlled the itching and flaking, you can reduce use of the dandruff shampoo to just twice a week. If your skin is affected, you can use an over-the-counter antifungal cream to help control the itching and flaking. Prescription-strength shampoos and lotions are available if the over-the-counter products aren't successful for you.

    Considerations

    • Seborrheic dermatitis can be very embarrassing. It is a chronic condition that will need to be controlled with treatment for life. There are times when the symptoms will be under control, and there will also be times when the condition becomes more aggressive. Using the proper treatments and having an open discussion with your doctor will help prevent some of the low self-esteem and mental stress associated with the condition.
