- Healthy nails are considered to be a sign of one's health. Unhealthy nails can signify various problems. In particular, nail discoloration can indicate problems with the liver, kidney, lungs or heart. Increase in the thickness of nails can signal the presence of psoriasis. A disorder of concavity -- the inward rounding of nails rather than outward, may predict iron deficiency (anemia). Nails that are pink and white indicate kidney disease, and nails that look like hammered brass are an indication of hair loss.

A very common ailment associated with nails is a condition known as ingrown toenails, in which the nails dig into the skin of the toe. The big toe is the one that usually is affected. The typical culprits of this problem include nails that are filed improperly and constant pressure from the shoes, which leads to crowding of the toes.
Another common disorder associated with nails is fungal nails --- an infection of the layer beneath the nail caused by fungus. Usually, the color of the nails becomes darker and foul smelling. Heredity can also be a cause for many disorders such as ingrown nails. Repeated wetting and drying of fingernails can cause brittle, splitting nails. Any condition in which fungus and bacteria thrive --- such as heavy perspiration, working in a humid atmosphere, wearing socks that don't absorb perspiration, etc. --- is prone to cause nail diseases and disorders.
- People diagnosed with various diseases and ailments may also show signs of nail diseases and disorders. Specifically, those who suffer from chronic ailments such as circulatory disorders, diabetes and immune-deficient states are most likely to have fungal nails.

There are a number of tips and solutions to consider when it comes to preventing and/or getting relief from nail diseases and disorders. For instance, while doing household chores, wear gloves to keep your hands dry. Also, immersing your feet in warm salt water and applying some antiseptic will provide relief from ingrown nails.
To avoid infection, always remember to wash your feet with soap and water, and dry them properly, and be sure to wear fresh and clean socks and hosiery every day. Last, wear footwear that fits well and is made from materials that allow your feet to breathe.
