Sleeping Positions During Pregnancy
Sleeping in a comfortable position helps a woman with her aches and pains by allowing her body to rest. Some of the reasons it is so hard to find a comfortable sleeping position while being pregnant is due to the enlarging of the abdomen, leg cramps, pressure on the uterus, back pain, shortness of breath and heartburn. Sleeping positions can help the baby also. For example, sleeping on the side can help with the pressure on the uterus which gives the baby more space to move. There are many sleeping positions during pregnancy.
-
Sleeping on Side
-
The best position to sleep during pregnancy is SOS, sleeping on side. Doctors recommend that a pregnant woman sleep on her side, especially her left side. Sleeping on her left side helps blood circulation. Doctors would rather a pregnant woman sleep on her left side because laying on the right side of the body puts too much pressure on the liver, which is on the right side of the body.
Heartburn
-
Many women suffer from heartburn during pregnancy, keeping them up at night. A pregnant woman who suffers from heartburn can use pillows to prop up her upper body. The pillows help relieve the pressure on her body---pressure that helps create heartburn.
-
Shortness of Breath
-
Pregnant women experience shortness of breath due to the increasing room the fetus takes up in the body and the woman's increased hormones. A side-sleeping position with pillows will help a pregnant woman get a good breath in and a good night's sleep. Women should use pillows to prop themselves up on their side. The pillows help them to stay in position and not roll over.
Sleeping on Stomach
-
Sleeping on your stomach is bad for you and your baby in the later stages of pregnancy. It is bad for the baby because it squishes the baby in the uterus. It is bad for the woman because it puts pressure on her vital organs. A pregnant woman should never sleep on her stomach.
Sleeping on Back
-
One of the worst sleeping positions for a pregnant woman is to sleep on her back. By lying on her back, a woman can cause her blood circulation to decrease and that of her baby. Sleeping on the back also causes breathing trouble and backaches, messes with the digestive system and causes low blood pressure.
