There are several different causes to a severely itchy scalp. Often an itchy scalp is due to dryness or an oily scalp. Stress, a poor diet, bad washing habits, psoriasis, seborrheic dermatitis and even lice can also lead to an itchy scalp. If you are experiencing a severe itching of the scalp, you'll want to seek treatment as soon as possible to avoid any infection. If you've exhausted all home and over-the-counter remedies, you'll want to seek the advice of a dermatologist.

Purchase an anti-fungal shampoo, especially if you are experiencing severe itching due to dandruff. These types of shampoos can be purchased over the counter. However, if the itching spreads to your ears, face or neck, seek out a doctor who can prescribe a more effective type of shampoo.

Take an antihistamine to provide temporary relief of severe itching. Robert Richards, a spokesperson from the American Academy of Dermatologists, suggests antihistamines such as Benadryl or Chlor-Trimeton because they contain many anti-itching ingredients. These products will be helpful at night, taken before bed, as they contain a sedative.

Apply olive oil to your scalp before shampooing. While you're in the shower, apply enough olive oil to cover your entire scalp and let it sit for 10 minutes. Olive oil soothes dry and itchy skin. Once the olive oil has sat on your scalp for 10 minutes, continue with your shampoo routine.

Tip

  • A severe itchy scalp can be due to head lice. If head lice are found, see a dermatologist immediately to avoid spreading the lice to others. Certain chemicals in hair care products and treatments also may lead to severe itching of the scalp. If you notice symptoms within 48 hours of undergoing a chemical process to your hair or using a certain product, immediately stop usage and see a dermatologist.
