Problems with Cosmetic Fillers

Cosmetic fillers are used as a way to eliminate or diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The product is typically injected into the face to increase tissue amounts in the facial region to get rid of wrinkles or augment the lips temporarily. If you are interested in cosmetic fillers, you will want to first research potential problems with the product.

  1. Types

    • There are numerous types of cosmetic fillers on the market that can be used by plastic surgeons and dermatologists to achieve the client's desired results. Popular brands include Botox, which relaxes the facial muscles to get rid of wrinkles and to prevent more wrinkles from forming. Restylane uses hyaluronic acid to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, as well as to augment the lips. Radiesse uses calcium and phosphate ions to promote tissue growth in areas of the face that contain wrinkles and fine lines. Other brand names of cosmetic fillers include collagen, Juvederm and Zyderm.

    Skin Abnormalities

    • One of the most common problems with cosmetic fillers is that using the product can cause an abnormal skin appearance. For example, overfilling can cause uneven facial contours and give the skin a bumpy look. Botox injections relax the facial muscles, which can prevent a person from making natural expressions.

    Side Effects

    • There are side effects that may occur with the usage of dermal fillers. An ulcer can occur if the injection is inserted incorrectly into a blood vessel and cuts off the blood supply. A person is also at risk for developing a bacterial infection or experiencing an allergic reaction to the ingredients found in the filler. Bruising and pain at the injection site are the most common side effects and can usually be relieved with ice application.

    Considerations

    • Another problem with cosmetic fillers is that the results only last for a short period of times. Treatments like Botox and Restylane last an average of 3 to 6 months and require regular injections to maintain the results. This can prove expensive since each treatment will cost at least a few hundred dollars.

    Warning

    • For safety, you should always visit a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon for cosmetic filler injections. Avoid Botox parties or similar events where groups of people gather to receive a discounted injection. These parties are done in a non-medical setting and can be dangerous should side effects develop.
