Travel Documents Needed for the Bahamas
The Bahamas are popular destinations for American travelers. The official language is English, the temperatures are mild, American currency is accepted across all of the islands, and the time zone is the same for that of New York. Frequent flights from all over the U.S. make it easy to get to the Bahamas, where there are hundreds of hotels and resorts for visitors. As of Jan. 23, 2007, American citizens were required to have valid passports to enter and leave the Bahamas. This rule went into effect for cruise ship passengers on June 1, 2009. Here are more details on travel requirements.

The U.S. Department of State writes that "U.S. citizens planning on an extended stay of several months may be asked by Bahamian immigration authorities to provide proof or evidence of financial solvency upon entry to The Bahamas." If you plan to stay longer than six months, or have no return or onward tickets, take a statement from your bank giving your current balance with you.

According to the U.S. Department of State, "Children under age 16 will be able to continue crossing land and sea borders using only a U.S. birth certificate (or other form of U.S. citizenship such as a naturalization certificate). The original birth certificate or a copy may be used." However, the Department of State strongly recommends that all individuals, including infants and children, have a valid passport when traveling outside of the U.S.
