What Is Mederma?

Mederma is a topical gel made from botanical extracts that can be purchased over-the-counter. It is used to minimize the appearance of new or existing scars that are the result of surgery, acne, burns or injuries. It is also used to minimize the appearance of stretch marks brought on by pregnancy or weight gain. Mederma contains sunscreen which helps to protect scars from becoming darker. Mederma is packaged in 20-g or 50-g tubes.

  1. Smell and Apperance

    • Mederma is a non-greasy, non-sticky gel. It is clear and it dries quickly. Because the gel is colorless and has a pleasant smell, individuals can apply it without worrying about having an offensive, medicine-like smell. Mederma makes a version of the gel for children that comes in a kid-friendly purple. Mederma for kids contains the same topical gel that is contained in the regular version.

    Application

    • Mederma can be safely used by both adults and children. The makers of Mederma recommend that old scars be treated three times a day for up to 6 months. Recommendations for new scars are three times a day for 2 months. To apply, squirt a small amount of the gel onto your index finger and massage it into the scar tissue. If a skin irritation occurs, the number of daily applications can be reduced. The gel should not be applied to open or broken skin.

    Reactions

    • Some individuals have been known to have an allergic reaction to the gel. Symptoms of a reaction include itching and skin swelling. If a reaction should occur, wash the area with soap and water and notify your physician to see if followup care is advised.

    Acne Considerations

    • Individuals who are treating acne scars should be very careful that the gel does not get into their eyes. When applying Mederma to the face, it is advised that the eye area be avoided to reduce the chances of the ointment accidentally making contact with the eyes. If the gel should get into the eyes, the eyes should be flushed with water and a physician consulted. Mederma may aggravate existing acne.

    Convenience

    • Mederma can be purchased at most drug retailers. The ointment is generally found on the first-aid aisle. However, some stores may also place it in their beauty department.
