Treatments for Lack of Energy

Fatigue and low energy can interfere with your life. You're less productive at work, and tiredness can impact your concentration. There are ways to combat low energy. But instead of relying on caffeinated or sugary energy drinks for an energy boost, consider healthy alternatives. Making simple lifestyle changes may be the way to increase your energy level.

  1. Get Proper Rest

    • Going to bed late and waking up early can lower your energy level. Strive for at least eight hours of sleep a night. For a restful night's sleep, turn off the lights and television. If you need background noise, use a fan or play calming music. Resting your eyes throughout the day may also combat low energy. Take a power nap, if possible. And give your eyes a break from the computer to prevent eye strain and tension headaches.

    Exercise

    • Leading a sedentary life can decrease your energy. To treat lack of energy, start an exercise routine and workout for at least 30 minutes a day--more if possible. Simple exercises, such as walking, jogging, swimming, biking and aerobics, improve the circulation of blood and oxygen and increase energy.

    Eat Smaller Meals

    • Eating three large meals a day may contribute to low energy. Going several hours without eating causes your blood sugar to drop. In turn, you feel tired. On the other hand, eating four to six small meals throughout the day (perhaps every three hours) regulates your blood sugar and you're less likely to feel tired.

    Healthy Eating Habits

    • Caffeinated beverages and sugar can provide an quick energy boost. However, this is often followed by a "crash period," wherein your energy level suddenly drops. This results in fatigue, brain fog and headaches. Limit your intake of these foods and beverages. Choose healthy alternatives such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Also, taking a multivitamin provides you with the recommended daily dose of essential vitamins and nutrients, which can also help you combat low energy.

    Improve Your Mental Health

    • Being depressed or anxious can be mentally draining and result in fatigue or low energy. Take herbal supplements such as St. John's Wort or Sam-E to naturally improve your emotional and mental well-being. If necessary, talk to a doctor and ask about an antidepressant or anti-anxiety medications.
