If your toenails are yellow, there is a possibility that you may have a fungal infection in the bed of the nail. Nail fungus is treatable but should be given attention as soon as it begins in order to avoid worsening of the symptoms. Untreated, this fungus can eventually cause loss of the affected nail.

    Symptoms

  1. One of the earliest and most obvious symptoms of toenail fungus is a yellowing of the nail. The nail may also become thicker, change shape and take on a crumbly texture. As the condition progresses, these more mild symptoms may be accompanied by pain while walking and an unpleasant odor.
  2. Causes

  3. Most forms of fungus become active in moist, warm, dark environments. Toenail fungus is no exception. The most likely cause of an infection and the subsequent yellowing of the toenails is continued exposure to warmth and moisture, according to the Mayo Clinic. These conditions may be the result of wearing moist socks for a prolonged period or during heavy activity, or contact with a community area like a gym shower or a pool.
  4. Home Remedies

  5. There are several home remedies for yellow toenails using items easily found at a grocery or health food store. According to an L.A. Times article, Vick's VapoRub has been used as a home remedy with success. To use, apply VapoRub to the affected nail nightly before bed. Putting on a sock before sleeping will help to keep your sheets clean and to contain the treatment to the nail itself. This treatment may cause the damaged nail to fall off, but a new healthy nail will replace it. Vinegar and tea tree oil can be used in a similar manner.
  6. Medical Treatments

  7. If you visit your doctor, your medical treatment options will most likely be either an oral supplement or a topical cream. Oral treatments---such as Sporanox or Lamisil--for toenail fungus and yellow toenails have been known to cause severe side effects such as congestive heart failure or liver test abnormalities, according to RxList. Your doctor may also proscribe a cream or ointment stronger than what is available over the counter. The Mayo Clinic also indicates that your doctor may suggest the surgical removal of the nail in extreme cases.
  8. Maintenance

  9. Once your yellow toenails have been cured, take steps to ensure that the fungus does not return. Do not wear moist socks for long periods of time; change them often if necessary or use a drying foot powder in your shoes. Wash your feet with water and soap often and dry them thoroughly. Keep toenails neatly cleaned and trimmed.
  10. Warning

  11. While home remedies for yellow toenails are undoubtedly less expensive and more convenient than visiting a doctor, these solutions may not be sufficient. In the event that the discoloration darkens or pain and odor become apparent, you may want to make an appointment with your doctor.
